Ever wonder what goes into making a set of Rebel Dice or a handmade dragon egg dice bag? Here’s a peek behind the scenes at the magic (and hard work) that brings them to life.
It all starts with a set of Master Dice: a plain, transparent 3D-printed set made exclusively for Rebel Dice. These Master Dice are carefully crafted to precise dimensions and polished to perfection, serving as the foundation for creating silicone molds. These molds capture every sharp edge and crisp number, ensuring that the finished dice maintain the same level of precision and detail.
Once the molds are ready, the real fun begins! I design each set with care, mixing resin with glitter, moss, or other pretty things to create unique designs. Depending on the design, I might add mica powders, alcohol inks, glitter, or even tiny inclusions like dried flowers or moss.
The resin is poured into the molds and to prevent air bubbles from forming *because no one wants cursed dice (at least, not unintentionally)*, I cast the resin in a pressure pot at high pressure, which compresses any bubbles and ensures a smooth, even finish.
After about 24 hours of curing, the dice are ready to be freed from their molds.
At this stage, the dice are still soft and need several more days to fully cure and reach their final hardness. Once the dice have cured, I begin the labor-intensive process of sanding.
I carefully sand away any mold lines working through multiple grits of sandpaper, starting with rougher grits to remove imperfections and gradually moving to finer grits. After sanding, I polish each die to a glass-like shine.
With the dice polished to perfection, it’s time to ink the numbers! Sometimes gold, sometimes silver, sometimes whatever makes the design pop!
Once the numbers are painted and cleaned up, I snap some nice photos so you can see all the details when they go live on the website.
From start to finish, a single set of dice can take up to two weeks to complete, but the result is worth it!
Dice deserve a worthy home, so I also make crocheted dice bags shaped like dragon eggs. Each bag starts with a crochet hook and a lot of patience, crocheting the textured design is a slow process, but so worth it in the end.
Since the crochet pattern leaves small gaps, I line each bag with grey fabric to make sure no dice make a sneaky escape. This also gives the bags a bit of extra structure and durability. Once the lining is stitched in, the bag is ready to protect your dice on all your adventures.
